Obituary

Mary Ellen Murphy, 75, returned to her heavenly home on December 20th, 2019 after a valiant battle with cancer. Her firm belief in God supported her in her struggles and ultimately gave her peace in life and also in death. Born August 2 1944, to the late Edward and Winifred Whelan of Brooklyn NY, she was immersed into the Catholic faith that would remain her lifelong support from an early age.
Mary was blessed to be raised in a loving family, including two brothers, Ed and Frank Whelan, and a sister, Patricia Wilson. Mary was a homemaker before starting a career for the National Park Service, both Gateway National Park and the Statue of Liberty. When Mary relocated to Monroe, NY she worked in retail, as a Nursing Assistant and her last and favorite role of all; Pet Sitter.
Mary is survived by her three loving children; Robert P. Murphy and his wife Cindy of Pensacola, FL, Patricia A Esham and her husband Josh of Riverside, CA, George E Murphy and his wife Dina of Patterson, NY and nine grandchildren, Bobby, Ryan, Brendan, Kaitlin, Matthew, Riley, Kylie, Connor, and Thomas. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and a host of long time friends.
Mary was a proud member of AA and will be missed very much both by those who sat along side her in the recovery community and those she helped in both sobriety and faith. She proudly celebrated twenty four years sobriety this past September.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Beecher Funeral Home- 1 Putnam Ave Brewster, NY from 2-4pm and 6:30-8:30pm. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Saturday December 28, 2019 at 10am at St James the Apostle Church- 14 Gleneida Ave Carmel, NY.

I met Mary back in 2002 when I started working at Arden Hill Hospital. She was always so loving so caring and so dedicated to her patients as well as her coworkers. Always had a smile on her face. When my dad took sick Mary was so supportive of my family and myself. She would offer prayer chains at her church for him. When he passed away Mary was devastated. She made me three Christmas balls with a poem and a white feather in each. We still have them and to this day treasure them. When Mary was getting ready to retire I had crocheted her an angel Afghan as well as a prayer shawl. She treasures them. I gave her a Sacred Heart medal that belonged to my dad as I knew her of all people would treasure it. Mary you are going to be missed by all who knew you. But you are at peace now and out of pain. You are with God in Heaven where all angels belong. Please keep an eye on us and have the coffee ready when I get to ring the bell at the gates. Rest In Peace. AnnMarie Murphy
