Walter L. Lipman, 99, of Somers, NY, died peacefully at his home in the company of his family on October 1, 2020.

Walter was born October 30, 1920 in New York City. Son of the late Walter Sr. and Florence Albert Lipman, Walter graduated from Dartmouth College in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He enlisted in the United States army, rising to the rank of Captain and ultimately serving under General MacArthur during the post-war period in Tokyo.

Walter worked for the New York Times, where he met his wife, Doris Donn. They were married in 1954 and lived in Rye Brook, NY for 33 years, where they raised two sons before moving to Somers, NY in 1992. Doris passed away on December 18, 2019.

Walter subsequently worked in the real estate division of Bear Sterns. Eventually he started his own real estate company in South Orange, NJ and successfully retired in the late 1990s. He served for many years on the Rye Town planning board and the condominium association in Somers. He was a competitive swimmer, a skier, a runner, and a great cook, inspiring his children in the art of home cuisine.

Mr. Lipman is survived by his son Andrew and his partner Kate Daddona, son John, and grandson Aaron P. Lipman and his wife, Kiana B. Lipman. Walter was predeceased by his sister, Anne Blancheri.

Internment will be Tuesday, October 6 at 1:00 P.M., at the Orleans Cemetery, Orleans, MA. A private memorial celebration will be held in Westchester at the end of October.

Dear Family:
Just learned of Walters passing. Ed and I feel so lucky to have known both Walter and Doris and shared Cape Cod life with them. We will miss the chicken marabella dinners, the political discussions, the laughter that accompanied these evenings and the warm welcome that we received.
Our only regret is that we did not meet sooner so we could have more time together.

Nina and Ed Goldman
