William DeBonis, a 40-year resident of Brewster, NY, died peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the New York VA Medical Center in Manhattan. He was 80 years old.

Born on December 25, 1938 in Corona, Queens, NY, son of William and Theresa (Ferrucci) DeBonis. William was a graduate of Queens Vocational High School. He served in the US Navy from 1956 until 1962. He later attended NYU and received his Master’s Degree.

On November 5, 1960 he married the love of his life and best friend Joann Severino at St. Leo Church in Corona, Queens, NY.

William was an Industrial Arts Teacher having worked at P.S. 118 & I.S. 193 in the Bronx for 30 years. He retired in 1995. He enjoyed working with his hands. He could fix or repair almost anything. William could be found assisting his sons with many projects…he was very knowledgeable. William loved his garden and loved traveling to Florida. He enjoyed swimming and visits to the beach. Above all, he was a family man.

William was an active member of the Italian American Club in Brewster for over 30 years. He valued his membership and friends from the American Legion where he volunteered for many years and was also a member of the Elks.

Besides his wife Joann of 59 years, William is survived by his sons William (Isolina) DeBonis and James (Jean) DeBonis, both of Poughquag, NY; his daughter in law Maryellen DeBonis of Patterson, NY; his brother Donald DeBonis of New Jersey and his eight grandchildren, Valerie, John, Maeghan, Connor, Daniel, Stefania, Nicholas and Isabella. He was predeceased by his son John DeBonis. William will also be forever remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 10:00am at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1 Doherty Drive, Lake Carmel, NY. Interment followed at St. Sebastian Columbarium, Lake Carmel. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Avenue, Brewster, NY from 4pm-8pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in William’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220
